The Parador Hotel in Calahorra - Parador de Calahorra
The modern four star Parador de Calahorra is a red brick construction standing in huge gardens filled with palm trees and flowers which runs along the full length of the main street in Calahorra. It is one of the towns on the plains of the Ebro River in the Cidacos Valley that flows from west to east through to the south of the Pyrenees Mountains that form the border between Spain and France. The plains of the Ebro River are very fertile and a large proportion of the land is used for growing the grapes that make the famous Rioja red wine.
Calahorra used to be known by its Roman name of Calagurris. The most famous building here is the Cathedral which has wide portals and large windows. The other places to visit here are all religious with the churches of Santiago and San Andres, the Convent of the Carmelitas and the Bishop's Palace.
This Parador de Calahorra has 52 twin bedded rooms, one double, 2 suites and 5 single rooms . All have a private bathroom, a telephone, television, cable television and a mini bar. The building has heating and air conditioning. There is a bar and a restaurant and facilities to hold meetings.
The regional dishes prepared in the restaurant strongly feature those that use the local wine in the preparation with "memestra de versuras" which is a wine based vegetable stew, "pochas" (pinto beans), "chuletillas con pimientos" pork chops with peppers, "peras or molocotn al vino" which is pears or peaches in wine.
