The four star Parador de Baiona is a walled fortress which was once used to protect the port and surrounded by the sea on the Monterreal Peninsula in Pontevedra. It has amazing views over the sea, Baiona, the Isles de Cies and the Ria which leads into the busy port of Vigo. The parador is surrounded by a walled enclosure which is flanked by a pine forest. In Baiona you can walk through the old parts of the town to see the Monte Boi wall, the Collegial church, and the"Cruceiro" (stone cross) of Santisima Trinidad.
The Parador de Baiona has been built in the style of a Galician manor house in the walls of a medieval fortress. The focal point of this parador is the magnificent stone staircase that goes up from the entrance hall to the bedrooms on the first floor. The public areas reflect the theme of the large old fort with their grand proportions and walls decorated with memorabilia. The parador has very elegant living rooms and 92 twin, 13 double and 12 single rooms as well as 5 suites. The spacious rooms come equipped with a private ensuite bathroom, direct dial telephone, cable television, in room safe and a mini bar. Many of the bedrooms have a view of the sea.
The marina below the parador is full of yachts from all over the world and is a popular harbour for boats crossing the Atlantic or going from northern Europe to the south Atlantic, the Mediterranean or crossing the Atlantic to the Caribbean Islands. It was here that the small vessel Pinta arrived to tell the Europeans of the discovery of America and a replica of this ship, which was part of Columbus’ fleet, can be visited in the harbour and forms the focal point of a carnival held here every March to mark her arrival on 7th March, 1493. The Parador de Baiona has an outdoor terrace looking over the bay where you can obtain drinks or light meals or alternatively there is a very attractive interior courtyard. The hotel has a swimming pool, tennis court and children's playground. Other activities on offer in the area include diving, fishing, golf, horse riding, sailing, trekking and paragliding. The excellent restaurant here specialises in local dishes which include sea-bass with razor clams in a sauce of turnip greens, locally caught shellfish and Santiago cake which originates from the ancient pilgrimage city of Santiago de Compostela and is a type of pancake.
