The four star Parador Ayamonte stands on the site of the old castle which was originally made of rock with the village being built on the slopes of the hill surrounding it. The Parador Ayamonte is on a flood plain and has magnificent views over the River Guadiana and surrounding towns and villages lining its banks. This river forms the border between Spain and Portugal. Nearby places of interest are Sanlucar del Guadiana, Rocio-Donana, the San Francisco Temple, the Church of Nuestra Senora de las Angustias, the Salvador church in Ayamonte and the Huelva mountains.
The coastal area surrounding the Parador de Ayamonte is of particular interest to nature lovers since many species of birds nest in the area. Also the parades at Easter and Carnival (Shrove Tuesday) are well worth seeing. The local feast day of Nuestra Senora de las Angustias is on September 8th. There is also an International Music Festival which takes place here in August every year.

The area is famous for its cured ham and the local shrimps and prawns and the local menu includes dishes like "raya en pimento (ray with red pepper sauce), "rape en Amarillo" (anglerfish), "estofado de guisantes con chocos" (cuttlefish and peas), "el calamar relleno" (stuffed squid) and "coca ayamontina" which is an almond flavoured dessert.

How to get there:
It is located in the mouth of River Guadiana. The N-431 road which runs through the strawberry-growing region of Lepe, and the N-435 along the route which leads through the mountains of Huelva are the natural approach roads, although it is also possible to get there from Portugal along the Algarve motorway. Ayamonte is 52 km away from Huelva.
