The four star Parador de Arties is a traditional style chalet building situated in the Val d’Aran in the Catalan Pyrenees which is just 7km from Baqueira. It was originally the home of D Gaspar de Portola who discovered California. The province of Lerida is a natural paradise filled with flowers, trees and picturesque villages, where the woods and snow-capped mountain peaks in the winter and the fresh air and green landscape in the summer provide spectacular landscapes.
The Parador de Arties has a steeply sloping roof so that the heavy snow cannot accumulate. This results in the attic bedrooms having dormer windows looking out onto the roof. The traditional mountain chalet design is continued in the wooden beams featured in the bedrooms. The accommodation comprises 38 twin bedrooms, 9 double bedrooms, 4 suites and 7 duplex rooms. All come well equipped with satellite TV, a telephone and mini bar.
For skiers the Baquira Beret station is just 6km away, and there is a swimming pool, sauna and gymnasium at the parador.
The cuisine in the restaurant is influenced by the specialities of the region such as "cocido aranes" (chick pea stew), trout "a la llosa", "civet de jabalí" (jugged wild boar) and the sweet "pescajus de Artíes". There is also a bar for residents.
In Val d'Aran several of the villages have old Roman churches and the one in Santa Maria de Arties is particularly worth a visit. In the same village the old Roman baths are still preserved. There are three local feast days in the area. On June 24 it is the feast of San Juan, in Arties. In the same village the feast of San Jaime is celebrated on July 25th. The Cattle Fair in nearby Vielha is also a festival not to be missed.
The parador has numerous conference rooms which can accommodate up to 150 people including the Salón Chimenea. The common rooms are an ideal place to stay and rest before setting off for a full day of outdoor activities. Other towns to visit in the area are Viella which is the capital of the region and the rural market town of Bossost.
